On June 3, at the workshop of Rizhao Dongfang Electric Motor Co., Ltd. in the Rizhao High-tech Zone, a 3.6-megawatt permanent‑magnet motor—3 meters in diameter and weighing over 40 tons—was officially rolled off the production line. This marks the world’s first high‑power, intelligent permanent‑magnet motor system specifically designed for vertical mills, and it is the industry’s largest integrated intelligent permanent‑magnet motor system in terms of power output. With its outstanding efficiency and energy‑saving performance, it addresses the challenge of high energy consumption in large‑scale heavy‑industry equipment.
In heavy industries such as coal mining, power generation, and cement and building materials, large vertical mills are the core equipment for ore crushing and powder processing. However, when paired with conventional motors, their energy consumption remains stubbornly high, making them veritable “major energy consumers” on production lines for many years.
In March this year, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology issued the “Implementation Plan for High-Quality Development of Energy-Saving Equipment (2026–2028),” which clearly focuses on key equipment such as high-efficiency, energy-saving motors and seeks to accelerate the green and low-carbon transformation and upgrading of heavy industries including power, metallurgy, chemical engineering, and mining.
Grounded in policy guidance and pressing market demand, Rizhao Dongfang Motor Co., Ltd. focuses on the research, development, and manufacturing of intelligent‑drive permanent‑magnet motor systems, relentlessly pursuing breakthroughs to make motors more energy‑efficient and lower in emissions.
Permanent‑magnet motors inherently offer significant energy‑saving and consumption‑reduction benefits. However, when applied to large vertical mills, the operating conditions for high‑voltage permanent‑magnet motors are extremely demanding, requiring a high degree of integration across multiple components, including the motor itself and its associated drive system. “It’s like cramming an entire set of bulky items into a suitcase—everything must fit snugly and align precisely; even the slightest misalignment can compromise overall performance,” says Hu Qiang, head of the company’s Technical Department. “Moreover, the motor housing must support the mill assembly, with the entire unit bearing a load of nearly 2,000 tons, placing exceptionally stringent demands on material selection and structural design.”
Faced with multiple technical barriers and design bottlenecks, the company’s R&D team has remained firmly rooted in the production floor, leveraging vast amounts of operational data to iteratively refine parameters and conduct on-site verification of component compatibility. Each component is manufactured with tolerances kept within 0.03 millimeters, while the team continuously refines and optimizes its solutions, systematically overcoming one technical challenge after another.
From blueprint implementation to prototype assembly and full‑machine testing, and after multiple rounds of review, this 3.6‑MW high‑voltage permanent‑magnet motor was successfully rolled off the production line on schedule, the result of meticulous refinement throughout the entire process.
This hefty system may appear cumbersome, but it effectively cuts energy consumption and carbon emissions at the source, delivering tangible green benefits for businesses. “First, there’s the economic payoff: with an average energy‑saving rate exceeding 20%, it can help users save more than 3 million kWh of electricity. Second, there’s the environmental benefit: it’s equivalent to saving 400 tons of standard coal annually and reducing CO₂ emissions by over 1,800 tons.”
“Once this equipment has undergone the subsequent ancillary installation and retrofitting processes in collaboration with a leading industry player, it will be shipped to an industrial and mining enterprise in Hebei and officially put into service,” said Hu Qiang. “At that point, the site will no longer be filled with the loud, rumbling noise of outdated motors; the entire system will operate smoothly and quietly.”
With 13 years of dedicated expertise in the permanent‑magnet motor sector, Rizhao Dongfang Motor Co., Ltd. has focused on energy conservation and emission reduction in motor technology. To date, more than 1,000 permanent‑magnet motors have been deployed in the market, with a total installed capacity of 241,500 kW. Among these, four product models have received national‑level energy‑saving product certifications.
