The water intake pump station and pretreatment facilities project for a reservoir in Shanghai is located at the upstream source of the Huangpu River. Construction officially commenced in April 2020, and the project was completed, passed acceptance inspection, and commissioned on June 17, 2021. The scope includes the construction of a new intake pump station with a design capacity of 60 cubic meters per second. The facility is equipped with two vertical axial-flow pumps driven by Rizhao Dongfang vertical permanent‑magnet synchronous motors; each pump has a flow rate of 10 m³/s, a power rating of 450 kW, operates at a voltage level of 6 kV, and runs at a speed of 178 r/min, utilizing natural cooling.

In addition, alongside this batch of permanent‑magnet motors, four excitation‑type synchronous motors of the same power and speed—manufactured by a major Shanghai motor plant (see the figure above)—were commissioned at the same time. Following installation, feedback from the owner indicated that the Rizhao Dongfang permanent‑magnet motors outperformed the excitation‑type synchronous motors in multiple aspects, including size, efficiency, power factor, and noise levels. The project was selected as a “Centennial Commemoration Project” for the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China in 2021 by the Shanghai Municipal Government.
